Las Cruces is known for its role as New Mexico's space industry hub, it's home to Virgin Galactic's headquarters and near White Sands Missile Range and Spaceport America. The city is also the heart of the Mesilla Valley's agriculture, famous for Hatch-region chile cultivation, and hosts New Mexico State University, the state's land-grant institution. Las Cruces had a population of 111,385 at the 2020 census, making it New Mexico's second-largest city after Albuquerque. The larger Las Cruces metropolitan statistical area, which encompasses all of Doña Ana County, had an estimated 230,000 residents in 2024. The city has experienced steady growth driven by New Mexico State University, government employment, and an influx of retirees.

The city sits at 3,908 feet elevation in the Chihuahuan Desert, resulting in low humidity and significant temperature swings between day and night. Rainfall is minimal, though summer monsoons bring occasional thunderstorms.

Las Cruces has attracted a growing number of out-of-state retirees in recent decades, drawn by affordable living, year-round sunshine, and mild winters. Las Cruces is in southern New Mexico, 42 miles northwest of El Paso, Texas, 225 miles south of Albuquerque, and 41 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border. Most visitors fly into El Paso International Airport and drive northwest on I-10, though Albuquerque's airport serves travelers from the north. The city sits at the intersection of I-10 and I-25, making it a natural crossroads between the Southwest and Mexico.
