How We Pick
Every Scoop list answers one question: who's actually the best around here? Here's how we decide.
What goes into a ranking
We start by getting to know the local market for a category, then weigh several signals together for each business:
- Reputation, in depth. We read a business's full body of customer feedback for the specifics, what's consistently praised, what gets flagged, and how steadily the experience holds up, not just the headline rating. Strength counts, but so does whether it's earned across many recent experiences rather than a handful of old ones.
- Track record. How long a business has served the town, how consistently it performs over time, and how it handles the rare bad week.
- Local standing. Whether a business is genuinely recommended and relied on in its community, the read you'd get from asking around town, not just a number on a profile.
- Category fit. What "best" means differs by trade, the bar for a roofer isn't the bar for a dentist, so we judge each business against the standard that actually matters for its category.
- Human editorial call. Our editors weigh all of it and decide the final order on every list. We weigh these signals together rather than running a public scoreboard, so we can use judgment and can't be gamed.
A business only makes a list if it genuinely earns a place, and the final order is an editorial decision, not a formula.
What we don't do
You can't buy a spot in our editorial ranking, and paying never changes our honest assessment of a business. Partner businesses are clearly labeled, and a partnership never buys or moves a ranking, which we explain below. We don't rank national chains in place of genuine local businesses. And we don't post negative hit pieces: a guide highlights the best options favorably, it isn't a place to trash anyone.
Partner businesses
When a business we recommend also has a paid relationship with The Scoop, we label it a Partner. A Partner must independently meet the same editorial quality standards as every other business on the list, the partnership never changes where it ranks or what we write about it, and the label is always clear. We disclose these paid relationships consistent with FTC guidance.
Kept current
Every guide is date-stamped, and we re-assess and update it as the local picture changes, so what you read reflects our latest read on each business.
